George Russell Wins in Melbourne
George Russell won the Australian Grand Prix for Mercedes, achieving a remarkable one-two finish with teammate Kimi Antonelli, who finished second. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari rounded out the podium in third place, finishing 15 seconds behind Russell.
The race featured an intense battle, with seven lead changes between Russell and Leclerc in the opening laps. Lewis Hamilton finished fourth for Ferrari, while Lando Norris secured fifth for McLaren. Max Verstappen, who started from 20th position, managed to finish sixth for Red Bull.
Oscar Piastri did not start the race due to a crash on the way to the grid, leaving fans disappointed. The event marked the season opener for the 2026 F1 season and was the first race under new rules requiring management of electrical energy.
Lando Norris expressed concerns about the new regulations, stating, “We are going to have a big accident,” highlighting the potential risks involved. Meanwhile, Ferrari’s team principal Frederic Vasseur stated he had no regrets about their strategy during the race.
Charles Leclerc described the race as “very tricky,” while Lewis Hamilton found it enjoyable, saying, “I thought the race was really fun to drive.” George Russell, who took the win, advised his competitors to “shut up and focus on your own stuff,” emphasizing the competitive nature of the event.
Looking ahead, Formula 1 will head to Shanghai for the first Sprint weekend of the 2026 season, where teams will continue to adapt to the new regulations and strategies.
