Kyle Walker Announces Retirement
“I am sad to be making this decision, but I’m also very proud of what I’ve achieved with England,” said Kyle Walker, reflecting on his international career as he announced his retirement.
Walker, who has earned 96 caps for the England national team, played in five major tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO events. His final appearance came in a friendly against Senegal in June 2025.
Beginning his journey with the England national team in 2009, Walker made his senior debut against Spain in November 2011. Over the years, he became a key player, contributing to England’s runs to the UEFA EURO finals in 2021 and 2024.
“To represent your country once, let alone 96 times, I’m extremely proud of that,” Walker expressed, highlighting the significance of his achievements. He scored his only international goal against Ukraine in September 2023, further solidifying his legacy.
Throughout his career, Walker played for several clubs, including Sheffield United, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, and Burnley. He served as vice-captain during the UEFA EURO 2024, showcasing his leadership on the pitch.
Walker described his international career as a “whirlwind of a journey” and thanked various managers, including Fabio Capello, Roy Hodgson, Gareth Southgate, and Thomas Tuchel, for their support. He stated, “The book is now closed and it’s been a whirlwind of a journey, but one that I’ve really, really enjoyed.”
Thomas Tuchel, who coached Walker during his time with the national team, remarked, “I know all England fans will join me in congratulating Kyle on an incredible international career.”
As Walker steps away from international duty at the age of 35, his contributions to the England team will be remembered by fans and teammates alike.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding any potential future roles Walker may take on within football, but his impact on the game is undeniable.
