Anthony Russell, 43, has been charged with the murder of Ian Huntley at HMP Frankland, County Durham. The charge follows an incident where Huntley was attacked with a metal bar in a workshop on February 26, 2026.
Immediate Circumstances
Huntley, 52, was serving a life sentence for the notorious murders of 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in 2002. He succumbed to his injuries after being taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where he was placed on life support until March 6, 2026, when his condition deteriorated.
Russell, who was imprisoned in 2022, is known for a seven-day killing spree in October 2020, during which he murdered three individuals, including David Williams and his mother, Julie Williams. Russell was found guilty of three counts of murder and three counts of robbery, receiving a whole-life order, ensuring he will spend the rest of his life in prison.
Judge Mr Justice Wall previously described Russell as an “exceptionally dangerous” and manipulative man. His violent history raises concerns about the safety of others within the prison system.

Russell is scheduled to appear at Newton Aycliffe magistrates’ court via video link on March 11, 2026. Christopher Atkinson from the Crown Prosecution Service stated, “Our prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring the case to trial and that it is in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings.”
