Lossiemouth’s Triumph
“She’s a star mare. To come back four years in a row, let alone win, that is incredible,” said trainer Willie Mullins after Lossiemouth claimed victory in the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
Lossiemouth, the 7-5 favorite, finished six and a half lengths ahead of Brighterdaysahead, solidifying her status as one of the great mares in the history of the event. This win marks Lossiemouth’s fourth triumph at the Cheltenham Festival, having previously won the Mares’ Hurdle twice and the Triumph Hurdle in 2023.
Rich Ricci’s Success
Owner Rich Ricci expressed his excitement, stating, “Unbelievable, magic, great. It is hard to win these races, and she always tries.” His enthusiasm reflects the significant achievement of having a horse that has now won 14 of her 18 races, with ten victories at Grade One level.
Lossiemouth’s victory also places her among an elite group, as she becomes the eighth mare to win the Champion Hurdle. The race showcased her ability, especially as she sported cheekpieces for the first time, which may have contributed to her impressive performance.
Future Prospects
Jockey Paul Townend noted, “I think she’s so honest and genuine, that on her back you know whether it is happening or not,” highlighting the strong connection between horse and rider that has been pivotal in Lossiemouth’s success.
As the racing community celebrates this remarkable achievement, Lossiemouth is now hailed as a queen of Cheltenham, with commentators like John Hunt declaring, “Lossiemouth will be crowned queen of Cheltenham! The truth is – she is far too good.” The next steps for this champion mare remain to be seen, but her legacy at the Cheltenham Festival is firmly established.
