Sarah Parish, a 57-year-old actress known for her roles in films such as The Wedding Date and The Holiday, continues to make headlines not just for her acting career but also for her philanthropic efforts. Parish, who has been married to actor James Murray since 2007, has dedicated much of her life to charity work following the tragic loss of their daughter, Ella-Jayne.
In January 2009, Parish and Murray lost their eight-month-old daughter to congenital heart failure, a condition linked to her rare genetic disorder, Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome. This devastating experience led them to establish The Murray Parish Trust five years later, aiming to support seriously ill children and their families.
Since its inception, The Murray Parish Trust has raised over £5 million for Southampton Children’s Hospital. The organization focuses on providing essential resources and comfort to families facing catastrophic news about their child’s health. Their objectives include offering drama classes, yoga and music workshops, and creating comforting spaces within pediatric units.
Parish reflected on her journey, stating, “I’d been very lucky in life. Jim and I were rolling along, having a lovely time… And then suddenly something puts a spanner in the works and it’s quite unbelievable.” She emphasized the transformative nature of their loss, suggesting that it has shaped them into more patient and compassionate individuals.
As of now, the trust aims to reach every seriously ill child in the UK by 2035, a goal that underscores their commitment to improving the lives of children and families in need. Both Parish and Murray have been recognized for their charitable work, receiving MBEs for their contributions.
In addition to her philanthropy, Sarah Parish continues to act, with notable appearances in television shows such as Peak Practice, Broadchurch, and Industry. She is also a guest on the show Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh.
