Recent Changes to Twitter App Dark Mode
On March 5, 2026, Twitter announced a significant update to its app, particularly affecting the dark mode feature. This change comes as the company removes the night mode option from the app settings, a feature that had been available since its introduction in 2016.
Previously, users could toggle night mode independently within the app, allowing for a customized experience that catered to their preferences. However, the latest update has eliminated this in-app control, meaning that the Twitter app will now follow the dark mode setting configured at the device level.
If a user enables dark mode on their device, the app will automatically switch to dark or night colors when that setting is active. This adjustment aligns Twitter with practices seen in other social media applications, such as TikTok and YouTube, which have also adopted similar approaches to dark mode.
Nikita Bier, the head of product at X, explained that the removal of the in-app night mode toggle was framed as a systematic improvement aimed at refining the overall user experience. According to Bier, “The in-app control created problems across the application,” prompting the decision to streamline the settings.
Despite the rationale behind the update, some users have expressed frustration at losing a degree of control over how the app appears. The change reduces customization options, as users who prefer a darker interface may now have to accept dark mode across their entire phone interface.
Night mode was originally introduced as an option to reduce blue light exposure, catering to users who preferred a softer display during nighttime use. The recent update, however, marks a shift away from this individual customization.
As it stands, the removal of the app-specific night mode control has sparked discussions among users regarding their preferences and the implications of this change on their overall experience with the app.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding any potential future adjustments that may address user concerns about customization in the Twitter app.
