On March 11, 2025, Ben Thompson was violently robbed outside Cecconi’s restaurant in Burlington Gardens, Mayfair, London. The incident involved a gang of six men who ambushed him and stole his £7,000 Rolex watch, a gift from his partner, Andy Roche, for his 40th birthday.
The robbery has had significant psychological repercussions for Thompson, who now experiences flashbacks and persistent anxiety. He stated, “I am nervous and jumpy when I hear a jogger or cyclist approaching behind me,” highlighting the lasting impact of the traumatic event.
Roja Dove, a friend of Thompson, was also targeted during this incident and had a diamond-encrusted Patek Philippe watch stolen, valued at approximately £150,000. Dove expressed his feelings of insecurity, saying, “I feel very unsafe in London, a city I have loved my entire life.” He further lamented, “The theft of the watch has meant all my hard work has been pointless.”
In the aftermath of the robbery, two individuals were sentenced for their involvement. Hocine Boulanouar received a sentence of four years and three months, while Danis Tom-Deter was sentenced to two years and nine months. The gang had employed a ‘spotter’ to observe their victims prior to the attack, indicating a level of premeditation.
Judge Jeremy Benson remarked on the severity of the incident, stating, “This was clearly a very frightening experience on the streets of central London at night.” The robbery has raised broader concerns about safety in urban areas, particularly for those who frequent popular venues.
