The Inbetweeners revival is reportedly closer to becoming a reality following a major deal struck by series creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley in October. Netflix is brokering a multi-million pound deal for a reunion Inbetweeners movie that could feature the original cast, which includes Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley, and Blake Harrison.
The first Inbetweeners movie had the largest opening weekend ever for a UK-produced comedy film, grossing £13.2 million in August 2011, and went on to score a worldwide gross of $88 million. The show originally aired on E4 and ended in 2010 after three seasons, but it has continued to draw in new audiences since being streamed on Netflix.
The deal to bring The Inbetweeners back was announced by production companies Banijay UK and Fudge Park Productions. The original cast members have expressed enthusiasm about returning to their characters, with Iain Morris and Damon Beesley stating, “It’s incredibly exciting to be plotting more adventures for our four favourite friends (ooh friends).”
Fans of The Inbetweeners will likely be thrilled and relieved by this news, especially since there were fears that previous talks of a reboot might not lead to a television project. Joe Thomas commented on the situation, saying, “What has happened is that the people who wrote The Inbetweeners a while ago sold the rights to a larger entity, and they recently bought them back so they can make some more.”
Despite the excitement surrounding the revival, details remain unconfirmed regarding whether all original cast members will return and specific plot points or production timelines. The Inbetweeners is set to return for the first time in 16 years, although not on its original home Channel 4.
With the show being available to stream on Netflix, it is poised to reach households around the globe, potentially introducing the beloved characters to a new generation of viewers. The Inbetweeners has become a generational classic, and its revival is eagerly anticipated by fans old and new.
