Catalans Dragons Triumph Over Leigh Leopards
“That was the response we were all hoping for,” stated Joel Tomkins, head coach of Catalans Dragons, following their 22-16 victory against Leigh Leopards at Leigh Sports Village.
The match marked a significant turnaround for the Dragons, who were looking to bounce back after a defeat to St Helens. Tomkins expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, noting, “It was probably better than I expected, if I am honest.” The Dragons had previously lost to Wigan and were eager to secure a much-needed win.
Catalans Dragons took an early lead, with Toby Sexton contributing two penalties and three conversions. The team was ahead 20-10 before Leigh attempted a comeback, showcasing a determined effort from the Leopards.
Harvey Wilson, Charlie Staines, and Lewis Dodd scored tries for the Dragons, while Innes Senior and Tesi Niu found the try line for Leigh. Despite their efforts, Leigh Leopards have struggled this season, managing only one win from their first four games.
Tomkins highlighted the defensive resilience of his team, stating, “If somebody missed a tackle, there was somebody else turning up.” He also noted the commitment shown by his players, saying, “Even when Leigh scored, in every picture we had people chasing back.” This collective effort was crucial in securing the victory.
Leigh Leopards, who reached the play-off semi-finals last year, are now facing challenges early in the season under coach Adrian Lam. The team will need to regroup and strategize as they look to improve their standing in the league.
The match showcased the competitive spirit of the Super League, with both teams displaying determination and skill. As the season progresses, both Catalans Dragons and Leigh Leopards will be looking to build on this match’s outcomes.
