“There is someone internally at Man Utd who is a big, big fan and dreams of Luis Enrique as Manchester United manager one day,” stated Fabrizio Romano, highlighting the ongoing speculation surrounding the club’s managerial search.
Currently, Manchester United has narrowed its options down to two candidates: Michael Carrick and Julian Nagelsmann. Carrick has been managing the team on an interim basis since January 2026, following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.
Under Carrick’s leadership, Manchester United has achieved notable success, winning seven, drawing two, and losing just one of their ten matches. This impressive record has positioned the team in third place in the Premier League table, three points ahead of fifth-placed Liverpool.
Despite Carrick’s strong performance, uncertainties remain regarding his future. His contract is set to expire in the summer of 2026, and there is no guarantee of an extension. Romano has ruled out a move for Luis Enrique to Manchester United at this time, further complicating the situation.
Keith Wyness remarked, “When I looked into it a bit further, the Pochettino contract actually goes into August after the World Cup,” indicating that other managerial options may also be limited.
Andy Townsend expressed his views, stating, “I think there’s probably someone out there better than Michael Carrick even though he’s done very well.” He added, “I don’t think his style of play would please the United fans. They want something more flamboyant.”
As Carrick continues to lead the team, he has seven more games to prove himself worthy of the permanent manager role. His ability to secure Champions League football for the next season is crucial, as finishing fifth in the Premier League guarantees entry.
While the club’s search for a permanent manager intensifies, details remain unconfirmed regarding the final decision and the timeline for appointing the new manager. The situation remains fluid as Manchester United navigates this critical period in their season.
