Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield, the influential bassist for the Stone Roses and Primal Scream, passed away on November 20, 2025, at the age of 63 due to respiratory issues caused by long-standing emphysema. His contributions to British music have left a lasting legacy, and the city of Manchester is set to honor him with a tribute concert.
The event, titled Manichester: A Tribute to a True Manc Legend, will take place on May 30, 2026, at the 5,000-capacity Diecast venue in Manchester. This concert aims to celebrate Mani’s life and musical impact, bringing together a host of rock ‘n’ roll heavyweights.
Confirmed acts for the concert include Cast and Peter Hook, along with a special assembled core band. Organizers Madchester.com and GIOGOI have received the blessing of Mani’s family for this tribute, which is expected to draw significant attention from fans and the music community.
All proceeds from the concert will support Mani’s twin sons, Gene and George, ensuring that his family is cared for in the wake of his passing. A major headliner is still to be announced, which is anticipated to further elevate the event’s profile.
In addition to the concert, a crowdfunder has been launched to create a permanent mural in Manchester to honor Mani. This project aims to raise funds for Maggie’s Manchester, a charity that supports individuals affected by cancer. The mural will be painted by artist Pic.One.Art and is set to be located in Failsworth, where Mani grew up.
The crowdfunding initiative has already achieved its first target of £11,981, with a stretch target of £25,000. The overwhelming support from fans across Greater Manchester and beyond has been instrumental in this effort.
“A host of rock ’n’ roll heavyweights are coming together to celebrate the life, legacy and unmistakable basslines of Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield,” said an organizer. This sentiment reflects the deep appreciation for Mani’s contributions to music and culture.
As the date approaches, fans and observers are eager to see how the tribute concert and mural project will unfold, with many expressing their desire to honor Mani in the place that shaped him in North Manchester. Details remain unconfirmed regarding additional acts and the final arrangements for the event.
