Lambeth Council is celebrating the borough’s Portuguese-speaking community with an event scheduled for June 13, 2026, from 6 PM to 10 PM. This occasion is in honor of the Day of Portugal, which falls on June 10, 2026. The event will feature music and dance performances, showcasing the vibrant culture of the local Portuguese community.
Funding for the event is provided through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, highlighting the importance of community support in fostering cultural celebrations. Little Portugal, a neighborhood in Lambeth, is home to one of the largest Portuguese-speaking populations in the UK, making this event particularly significant for local residents.
Cllr Marcia Cameron remarked, “Our Portuguese-speaking businesses are an essential part of Lambeth’s unique character,” emphasizing the integral role that this community plays in the borough’s identity. Cllr Diogo Costa added, “I am very pleased to see the active role that Lambeth Council is playing in bringing the Day of Portugal celebrations back to the borough,” reflecting a commitment to honoring cultural heritage.
In addition to the local event, the Scotland Under-21s will face Portugal in a match at Estoril on March 31, 2026, as part of the UEFA Under-21 Championship Qualifying. This sporting event further underscores the connection between the UK and Portugal, as both communities engage in cultural and athletic exchanges.
On a broader scale, Portugal has recently unveiled a tax package aimed at increasing housing supply and moderating rent leasing. The measures include a reduced VAT rate of 6% for construction works related to moderate rent properties. Moderate rent is defined as a monthly rent not exceeding €2,300, while the maximum acquisition value for moderate price properties is set at €660,982.
Moreover, the real estate transfer tax rate will increase to 7.5% for non-resident investors acquiring urban properties not intended for moderate rent. These changes are part of Portugal’s ongoing efforts to address housing challenges and ensure that residents have access to affordable living options.
