Rockstar Games Faces Data Breach Amid Ransom Demands

rockstar games — GB news

Rockstar Games confirmed a data breach occurred on April 11, 2026, involving the hacker group ShinyHunters, which has threatened to leak sensitive data unless a ransom is paid by April 14, 2026.

The breach reportedly involved access to a limited amount of non-material company information. Rockstar stated that the incident does not impact their organization or players, emphasizing that passwords or personal player data were not compromised. The hackers claimed to have a large collection of data from Rockstar Games, raising concerns about the potential fallout from the breach.

ShinyHunters, known for previous attacks on major companies such as Microsoft, Cisco, and AT&T, has demanded payment to prevent the release of the data. They announced their intentions through a message that warned of further complications if their demands were not met. “Rockstar Games, your Snowflake instances were compromised thanks to Anodot.com. Pay or leak. This is a final warning to reach out by 14 Apr 2026 before we leak, along with several annoying (digital) problems that’ll come your way. Make the right decision, don’t be the next headline,” the group stated.

The breach has been linked to a third-party analytics platform, Anodot, which Rockstar uses for data management. According to cybersecurity experts, the vulnerability arose from granting broad read permissions to Anodot on their Snowflake cloud service. “If you give a tool like Anodot broad read permissions on your Snowflake warehouse and that tool gets compromised, the data is gone,” said a cybersecurity analyst.

This incident follows a significant hack in 2022, where early gameplay footage of the highly anticipated game GTA 6 was leaked online. The game is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, and the recent breach raises questions about the security measures in place as the launch date approaches.

In response to the breach, a spokesperson for Rockstar Games stated, “We can confirm that a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed in connection with a third-party data breach. This incident has no impact on our organization or our players.” However, the threat posed by ShinyHunters has led to increased scrutiny of Rockstar’s data security practices.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed frustration over the breach, stating, “We take leaks very seriously indeed and they disappoint all of us, it’s really frustrating and upsetting to the team.” As the deadline for the ransom approaches, the gaming community and industry observers are closely monitoring the situation, with many hoping for a swift resolution to avoid further complications.
