Roger Speed Passes Away
Roger Speed has passed away at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy intertwined with Welsh football and the memory of his son, Gary Speed.
Known for his unwavering support of the sport, Roger was the father of Gary Speed, a celebrated Welsh footballer and manager who earned 85 caps for Wales and played for clubs including Leeds United, Everton, and Newcastle United.
Gary Speed tragically took his own life on November 27, 2011, at the age of 42, a loss that deeply affected the football community. Roger’s passing comes as a poignant reminder of the family’s connection to the sport.
The Football Association of Wales (FAW) expressed their sadness over Roger Speed’s death, stating, “The FAW is saddened to learn of the passing of Roger Speed, who was an incredible supporter of Welsh football.” This sentiment reflects the impact he had on the sport.
Roger Speed was also an Honorary Patron of Connah’s Quay Nomads, a role that highlighted his commitment to supporting local football initiatives. The club released a statement saying, “It is with great sadness that the club has overnight learned of the passing of the great Roger Speed who was an Honorary Patron to the club and long-time supporter as well as the father of legendary Welsh player and Manager, Gary Speed.”
