Sarah Vine, a prominent journalist, has recently shared her experiences with hair loss, coinciding with a significant ruling that classifies severe female hair loss as a ‘disability’. This ruling allows for specialized wigs or hair systems to be exempt from VAT, providing financial relief for those affected.

Vine has suffered from androgenic hair loss throughout her life, a condition that became particularly severe after the birth of her son, William. She has been candid about her struggles, even appearing on ITV’s This Morning without her wig, a move aimed at normalizing discussions around hair loss.
For nearly two decades, Vine utilized an integrated hair system from Lucinda Ellery in London, which allowed her to maintain a sense of normalcy in her daily activities, including sleeping and exercising. After a lengthy treatment involving drugs and painful injections to promote hair growth, she transitioned to wigs, currently owning three: two made from human hair and one synthetic.
The cost of these wigs reflects the challenges many face; a human hair wig can cost around £1,400, while a synthetic option is priced at £380. Vine’s journey with hair loss has not only impacted her appearance but also her confidence, which she describes as having significantly improved after using the integrated hair system.
Vine expressed her initial reluctance towards wigs, stating, “I thought wigs were embarrassing and very possibly unhygienic.” However, she now aims to de-stigmatize hair loss, saying, “I want to de-stigmatise this condition and if talking about it helps, great.” She emphasizes the importance of styling, noting, “The key with any wig, I’ve learnt, is clever styling.”
At 58, Vine reflects on her transformation, stating, “Now, when I catch sight of myself in a shop window, I don’t see a frumpy, middle-aged, well-past-her-sell-by-date old bag; I see a rather sassy brunette with a cheeky bob.” This statement encapsulates her journey from insecurity to self-acceptance, highlighting the broader implications of the recent ruling for many women facing similar challenges.
