Airlines worldwide are facing unprecedented flight cancellations as they respond to soaring jet fuel prices linked to geopolitical tensions. Major carriers like Spirit Airlines and Lufthansa have announced significant operational cutbacks.

Key cancellations:

Spirit Airlines announced it is winding down operations, with all flights cancelled.

Lufthansa Group will cancel 20,000 flights over the next six months to save jet fuel.

KLM cancelled more than 150 European flights due to rising fuel costs.

Air Canada plans to trim four of its 38 daily flights to New York.

SAS will cancel 1,000 flights in April because of high oil and jet fuel prices.

A total of 13,000 flights have been cancelled in May as holidaymakers face travel chaos.

Two million airline seats have been cut from May schedules worldwide.

Nigerian airlines temporarily suspended a planned nationwide shutdown of flight operations after government intervention. Spirit Airlines expressed disappointment, stating, “We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 34 years and had hoped to serve our guests for many years to come.” Meanwhile, KLM noted that its flights are no longer financially viable due to rising kerosene costs.

The aviation industry is bracing for further challenges. Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2, emphasized that holidaymakers should not worry about additional costs during their travels. However, Michael O’Leary, CEO of Ryanair, warned that several European airlines could face significant financial difficulties if jet fuel prices remain high throughout the summer season.

The situation reflects broader economic pressures affecting airline operations globally. Observers expect continued volatility in flight schedules as airlines adjust to fluctuating fuel surcharges and operational costs.

Despite concerns over jet fuel shortages due to the Middle East crisis, major budget airlines in the UK are confident in their ability to maintain full summer flight schedules.

Jet2 reported a 6.2% increase in summer passenger bookings compared to previous years. EasyJet confirmed it plans to operate a full schedule across its network this summer. Ryanair’s CEO stated that the risk of supply disruption is receding, with no disruption risk expected before the end of June.

Wizz Air launched its biggest-ever network from the UK despite the geopolitical crisis. Airlines are experiencing a shift in travel demand, with increased last-minute bookings due to the Middle East conflict.

The UK is particularly vulnerable to jet fuel shortages as it relies heavily on imports from the Middle East. Approximately three-quarters of Europe’s jet fuel originates from this region. However, airlines in the UK are not currently seeing a shortage of jet fuel, according to the Department for Transport.

Key facts:

Jet2 reported a 6.2% increase in summer passenger bookings.

EasyJet plans to operate a full schedule this summer.

Ryanair’s CEO sees receding risks of supply disruption.

Wizz Air launched its largest UK network amid geopolitical tensions.

Airports are set to ease regulations allowing airlines to cancel flights without losing their allocated slots if fuel scarcity occurs. Jet2’s spokesperson noted, “We remain in continual dialogue with our fuel suppliers, as is standard practice.” EasyJet’s CEO reassured customers, stating that operations will remain unaffected and there will be no surprise extra payments.

The situation remains fluid as airlines navigate these challenges. Yvonne Moynihan, managing director of Wizz Air UK, emphasized that “despite the challenging geopolitical crisis, business goes on as usual.” Observers will continue to monitor how these dynamics affect airline operations and passenger experiences this summer.

“It’s gone bust today, we got the news this afternoon. We’ve all been given the letters that it’s all going into liquidation,” a source close to Ascend Airways reported.

Ascend Airways has ceased all operations with immediate effect following its collapse into liquidation. The airline confirmed it will hand back its aircraft fleet and relinquish its UK Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC). It was established in 2004 but traded under the current name for only three years.

At the time of closure, Ascend operated a fleet that included one Boeing 737-800 and six Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The airline primarily functioned as a ‘wet-lease’ provider, supplying aircraft to other airlines. Employees were informed that operations would wind down after the final Oman Air service from Muscat on April 30.

The closure was attributed to various economic challenges, including the impact of the Iranian conflict on jet fuel availability. Employees now face uncertainty regarding their salaries; many may not receive full payment for May.

Despite the UK operations ceasing, Ascend Airways Malaysia remains operationally stable. It continues to meet all contractual obligations and is progressing with its expansion plans.

The company previously operated under the name Synergy Aviation before adopting the name Ascend Airways in 2023. The exact reasons for the economic challenges leading to the liquidation have not been fully detailed.
