The case involving Steve Figg Builder Essex escalated from a home extension project into a legal battle. Homeowners Rob and Lucy Davies contracted Figg to build a rear extension featuring a kitchen and an open-plan living area. The couple paid Figg £44,000 for the project, expecting it to take around 12 weeks. However, the situation quickly deteriorated.

Basildon Council’s building control team halted the construction work two months after it began. The council cited multiple breaches of building regulations. Figg ultimately pleaded guilty to 22 such breaches. The unfinished work left the Davies’ home in a dangerous state, with parts exposed and at risk of collapse.

The Davies spent an additional £28,000 to secure their property after the construction was halted. They described their home as looking like a bomb site due to Figg’s work. “The only way I could describe how our house looked was like a bomb site,” Rob Davies said.

In a surprising turn, Figg reported the couple to police, alleging harassment and claiming he wanted to kill them. The Davies were held in police custody for 22 hours following these allegations. Yet, they maintained that they were victims of poor workmanship and unsafe conditions.

Figg received a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. He was also ordered to wear an electronically monitored tag for six months. Additionally, he must pay £85,000 in damages to the Davies for the harm caused to their home.

This case highlights the risks homeowners face when construction projects go wrong. It raises questions about homeowner rights and the legal consequences builders may face when they fail to comply with regulations.

Officials have not confirmed whether further action will be taken against Figg or if any additional penalties are forthcoming. For now, the Davies hope to finally move forward from this ordeal.
