Royal Mail Stamp Prices to Increase in April 2026

The price of a first-class stamp will increase by 10p to £1.80 from April 7, 2026, while the price of a second-class stamp will rise by 4p to 91p.

This marks a significant change in postal costs, as the price of a first-class stamp has risen 137% since 2020, and the cost of a second-class stamp has increased by 40% over the same period.

Royal Mail has faced scrutiny for its delivery performance, having been fined £21 million by Ofcom for failing to meet its annual delivery targets. The last time Royal Mail met its target for delivering first-class post on time was in the 2019-20 fiscal year.

In response to the declining volume of mail, with 70% fewer letters sent than two decades ago, Royal Mail has made adjustments to its delivery services. These changes are currently being piloted across 35 delivery offices.

Royal Mail is now only required to deliver second-class post on alternate weekdays, a shift that reflects the changing landscape of postal services.

Anne Pardoe, a representative from the postal sector, stated, “Higher prices must come with higher standards – increases should be tied to Royal Mail’s performance on the doorstep.” This sentiment echoes the concerns of many residents, as noted by Miss Dodds, who mentioned, “Many residents are still contacting me about issues with Royal Mail.”

Miss Dodds also emphasized the importance of accountability, saying, “It’s right that Royal Mail bosses have now been called to parliament to answer for shortcomings in service.”

The adjustments in stamp prices and delivery practices come after Royal Mail’s owner was acquired for £3.6 billion by Czech billionaire Daniel Křetínský in June 2022, indicating a shift in management priorities.

As the new prices take effect, observers will be watching closely to see how Royal Mail addresses service quality and customer satisfaction amid these changes. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further adjustments to service standards or pricing strategies in the future.
