Denby Pottery Company has officially appointed administrators following significant financial struggles, a move that has raised concerns for its 600 employees across the UK. The company, which has been in operation for 217 years, filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators on March 11, 2026, and the formal appointment occurred on March 31, 2026.

Founded in 1809, Denby has long been a staple of British manufacturing, known for its stoneware production utilizing local clay resources. However, the company has faced mounting pressures from rising costs and reduced demand, leading to its current predicament.

As part of the administration process, around 80 workers have already been made redundant, impacting both the main headquarters located between Denby and Ripley, where 358 employees work, and the warehouse in Derby, which employs 43 people. The situation has prompted the company to launch a #SaveDenby campaign to rally public support.

Despite these challenges, Denby continues to fulfill orders placed online and through its stores, and its international subsidiaries in Korea, the USA, and China remain unaffected by the administration process.

Linsey Farnsworth, a spokesperson for Denby, stated, “While today is a dark day, the formal move into administration is a protective step aimed at keeping the kilns firing while a long-term investor is sought.” This reflects the company’s hope to secure investment partners to navigate its financial difficulties.

Sebastian Lazell, another company representative, expressed the challenges faced, saying, “I was trying to move heaven and earth to save the business, but I had to be realistic that there may not be a happy ending.” This sentiment underscores the uncertainty surrounding Denby’s future.

Denby Pottery Company has been a significant employer in the region, with many employees having dedicated decades to the craft. One observer noted, “People who have been there for 30, 40 years… their skills are in pottery and there isn’t anything else around here for them to do like that.” This highlights the potential impact of job losses on the local community.

As Denby navigates this challenging period, the outcome remains uncertain, with a new deadline set to secure its future in the coming weeks. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the potential for new investment or the long-term viability of the company.

How it unfolded

As Ripon, a city in North Yorkshire with a population of around 17,000, prepares to make its bid for the title of Town of Culture 2028, the community is rallying around its rich historical significance and cultural activities. The theme of the bid is centered on ‘pilgrimage’, a concept deeply rooted in Ripon’s history since it became a place of pilgrimage in 672 AD. This historical context not only enriches the city’s narrative but also emphasizes its longstanding connection to cultural and spiritual journeys.

On April 1, 2026, just days after the official opening of The Castle, a beloved interiors store in Ripon, the city is poised to leverage its heritage to attract attention and support for its bid. The Castle, which has been under new ownership since March 31, 2026, has been a staple in the community for three decades. Zoe Nemes, one of the new owners, expressed her excitement about this new chapter for their family business, stating, “We are so excited about this new chapter for our family business.” Her husband, Robert Nemes, added that their decision to acquire The Castle was driven by a deep appreciation for its heritage and strong connection to the local community.

In the days leading up to this pivotal moment, the Spring Fling event took place at Ripon Sailing Club on March 28 and 29, 2026. This event featured short course racing and a sailing-themed pub quiz, showcasing the community’s vibrant spirit and engagement in recreational activities. Oscar M emerged victorious in the competition, further energizing the local community as they prepare for the upcoming Easter Egg trophy race scheduled for April 5, 2026.

The Hornblower ceremony, which dates back to 886 AD, is another historical highlight that Ripon plans to showcase in its bid. This tradition, along with the city’s picturesque landmarks such as Ripon Cathedral, Fountains Abbey, and Hackfall Woods, underscores Ripon’s appeal as a cultural hub. John Dobson, a local figure, remarked, “Ripon has always been at the heart of a wider rural area and has an impact far beyond the city boundaries,” reinforcing the idea that Ripon’s influence extends well beyond its geographical limits.

Moreover, Ripon’s historical significance as a pilgrimage site aligns with contemporary trends, as pilgrimage routes across Europe, such as the Camino de Santiago, attract millions of visitors. Charlie Studdy, a local advocate for the bid, noted, “Across Europe, pilgrimage routes like the Camino de Santiago attract millions,” highlighting the potential for Ripon to tap into this growing interest in cultural and spiritual travel.

As the city moves forward with its bid for Town of Culture 2028, the involvement of various local organizations, including the Uredale Community Partnership, Ripon BID, and Ripon Arts Hub, plays a crucial role in mobilizing community support and resources. The collaborative efforts of these entities are essential in presenting a unified vision for Ripon’s cultural future.

Currently, Ripon stands at a significant crossroads, with its historical heritage and community spirit poised to play a pivotal role in shaping its future. The outcome of the Town of Culture bid will not only impact the local economy but also enhance the community’s sense of identity and pride. As Ripon continues to embrace its rich history while looking towards the future, the city remains hopeful that its efforts will resonate with the judges and the wider public.

Whitby is experiencing notable developments, particularly with a £1.2 million renovation project underway for the historic Old Town Hall, a Grade II* listed building. A recent funding bid of £125,000 aims to transform the venue into a vibrant heritage site, supported by both the government and North Yorkshire Council.

In a tragic incident, 49-year-old Jason Smith died from injuries sustained at The Elsinore Pub on Sunday, March 15, at 11:12 PM. The family of Jason Smith expressed their grief, stating, “On the evening of Sunday 15th March, a dearly loved son, brother, fiancé, uncle, cousin and friend was taken away from us all in devastating circumstances.” They added, “The loss of Jason has left such a huge void in all our lives that cannot ever be replaced.” Four men were arrested in connection with the investigation but have since been released on conditional bail.

In the realm of sports, Whitby Town is preparing for an upcoming match against Warrington Town at the Cal.Delivery Stadium, scheduled for Saturday at 3 PM. This match is particularly significant as it coincides with Non-League Day, an event celebrating semi-professional and grassroots football in the UK. Currently, Whitby Town sits two points above the relegation zone and has not secured a win in their last four games.

Paul Carden, the manager of Warrington Town, commented on the upcoming match, stating, “Our job is to make their life as difficult as possible, try and dictate the game on our terms, and produce the kind of front-foot display which our fans expect from a Warrington Town side.” He also expressed optimism about his team’s determination, saying, “There aren’t many games left now, but there’s a real determination within the squad to keep improving, and I want to see the players continue to do the right things.”

Significant Celebrations of St Piran’s Day

St Piran’s Day, celebrated on March 5th, has become a significant occasion for the people of Cornwall, marking their cultural identity and heritage. The modern celebration has been growing since the late 1990s, particularly linked to the 500th anniversary of the Cornish rebellion.

This year, the festivities included events in Launceston, Bodmin, Truro, and Falmouth, with the Penzance St Piran Furry being a highlight. Celebrating its 21st anniversary in 2026, the Penzance event involved hundreds of schoolchildren from local schools, showcasing the community’s commitment to preserving and promoting Cornish culture.

Community Engagement and Support

The Penzance Council supported the St Piran event with £1,860 in grant funding, emphasizing the importance of these celebrations. The event featured a procession that began at 10:15 am, along with performances of traditional songs, creating a vibrant atmosphere for attendees.

Stephen Reynolds, the Mayor of Penzance, attended the event and delivered an emotional speech, expressing gratitude to the young participants. He stated, “Thank you all and thank you especially to all you young people from our local schools who make this event what it really is, we really appreciate you!”

Recognition of Cornish Heritage

St Piran, recognized as the patron saint of Cornwall, is celebrated not only locally but also internationally in places such as Toronto, Mexico, Hong Kong, and Australia. The Cornish language, Kernewek, received official recognition under part III of the European charter for minority languages in January 2026, further solidifying the cultural significance of St Piran’s Day.

Will Coleman from the Cornwall Heritage Trust remarked, “St Piran’s Day is an opportunity to get out there and celebrate this newfound confidence in community, place and culture.” This sentiment reflects the growing pride among Cornish people in their identity and heritage.

Looking Ahead

As St Piran’s Day continues to gain momentum, it serves as a reminder of the importance of cultural celebrations in fostering community spirit. The event in Penzance included a procession that spanned 250 miles to the House of Commons, highlighting the broader significance of Cornish identity within the UK.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding future developments and potential expansions of the celebrations, but the enthusiasm surrounding St Piran’s Day suggests that it will continue to play a vital role in the cultural landscape of Cornwall and beyond.

On March 1st at Llandaff Cathedral, the classic green and white of pinned leeks was displayed alongside The Royal Welsh hackle, marking St. David’s Day.

Members of the Regular and Reserve forces from the 1st and 3rd Battalions convened in Cardiff, joined by veterans and special guests, to honor St David’s Day.

The event also celebrated the 20th anniversary of The Royal Welsh.

In 2006, a celebration in the capital marked the unification of the Royal Welch Fusiliers with the Royal Regiment of Wales, whose historical roots extend over three centuries.

Marking two decades of The Royal Welsh

Lieutenant Colonel Mark Adams, the Commanding Officer of 3 Royal Welsh, remarked: “The Regiment has honored St David’s Day since 1689, showcasing our Welsh heritage, which continues to be an essential element of the Regiment’s combat effectiveness today.

"Regardless of where our troops are stationed, we will always take the time to commemorate this significant date in the regimental calendar.”

The Regiment has been honoring St David’s Day since 1689, as noted by Lt Col Mark Adams, the Commanding Officer of 3 Royal Welsh.

The musical support within the cathedral was delivered by The Royal Welsh’s Regimental Band and Corps of Drums.

Royal Welsh troops also held official parades, engaged in athletic contests, and enjoyed a formal luncheon, during which selected soldiers participated in the renowned leek-eating tradition after entering the dining hall behind the Regimental Goat Major, mascot, and drums.

Brigadier Nigel Crewe‑Read OBE, Colonel of the Regiment, remarked: “The service at Llandaff Cathedral not only united the broader regimental family but also provided an opportunity to honor the Royal Welsh personnel who lost their lives or were injured during operational deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past two decades, along with all those from previous conflicts.”

Alongside an imminent operational deployment, The Royal Welsh is set to organize a Party in the Park at Cardiff Castle on September 12, commemorating the past twenty years since its establishment, in addition to its rich 337-year history.

At Combermere Barracks in Windsor, the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards will engage in various activities and festivities to celebrate St David’s Day.

The day pays tribute to our heritage, which is deeply rooted in Wales, as noted by Lt Col (Retd) Guy Bartle-Jones, Regimental Adjutant of the Welsh Guards.

Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Guy Bartle-Jones, the Regimental Adjutant, remarked: “From the very beginning, St David’s Day has played a pivotal role in the history of the Welsh Guards.

"On the 1st of March in 1915, we first took our post at Buckingham Palace, and since then, we have commemorated this occasion as a regimental day with a service, parade, and the presentation of leeks.

Welsh Guards celebrate their unique heritage on St David’s Day.

A delegation from the 5th/7th Battalion The Royal Australian Regiment (RAR) will also honor St David’s Day in Windsor, symbolizing a longstanding connection with the Welsh Guards that began in 1965.

In 2023, a contingent of the RAR participated in the St David’s Day parade at the barracks, marking the first occasion that HRH The Prince of Wales attended as the Colonel of the Welsh Guards.

No matter where we find ourselves in the world, we will always honor this remarkable occasion, Lt Col (Retd) Guy Bartle-Jones.

"This day is truly one of unity, and we will always honor this remarkable event no matter where we find ourselves around the globe.”

Getting ready for the deployment to Cyprus

The battalion is gearing up for a deployment to Cyprus, which will be only the second occasion the Welsh Guards have been stationed on the island — the last time being in 1975 as part of a United Nations Peacekeeping mission.

The battalion is set to take on the duty of ensuring security throughout the sovereign base areas prior to shifting into its function as the Regional Operations Battalion, offering Defence a quickly deployable strategic alternative in case of unrest in the Middle East or Africa.

Introduction

Coventry, a city in the West Midlands of England, is gaining attention for its unique blend of historical significance and modern transformation. Known for its rich heritage, particularly related to the automotive industry and its impactful role during World War II, Coventry is increasingly recognised for its cultural revitalisation and urban regeneration efforts. With numerous recent developments, understanding Coventry’s potential and relevance becomes crucial for both residents and visitors alike.

A Glimpse into Coventry’s History

Coventry has a storied past that dates back to the Anglo-Saxon period. It grew into prominence during the Middle Ages, recognised for its productive textile trade. However, it is the tragic events of World War II that shaped much of Coventry’s modern identity. The city’s iconic St. Michael’s Cathedral was left in ruins after the Blitz in 1940, symbolising resilience and the desire for peace.

Recent Developments and Cultural Growth

Fast forward to today, Coventry has undergone significant changes. It was named the UK City of Culture for 2021, which spurred a year-long celebration of arts and culture. The city hosted numerous events aimed at showcasing local talent and heritage, transforming public spaces, and promoting community engagement. One of the key developments was the creation of cultural venues such as the Coventry City of Culture Trust, which continues to promote the arts and engage communities after the celebration concluded.

Moreover, the regeneration projects within the city centre, including the refurbishment of the historic Drapers Hall and improvements to public transport, have made Coventry a more accessible and enjoyable city to live in. The announcement of a new state-of-the-art railway station further affirms its forward-thinking approach to urban development.

Conclusion

As Coventry embraces its role at the crossroads of history and modernity, it stands as a model for cities navigating similar transformations. With continued investment in culture, infrastructure, and community, Coventry is not only preserving its historical significance but also positioning itself as a vibrant urban centre for future generations. For residents, the ongoing evolution of the city promises new opportunities and experiences, while visitors can explore a city rich in history and alive with contemporary energy. As Coventry establishes itself on the national and international stage, its significance continues to grow, making it a city worth watching.
