Before this announcement, Aer Lingus planned to operate a full summer schedule. However, the need for maintenance has disrupted these plans significantly. Flights from Dublin to major European destinations are impacted, including Amsterdam, Athens, Berlin, Faro, and Zurich.

UK routes are also seeing reductions. Key services to London Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, and Newcastle face cancellations. The airline will reschedule most passengers on alternative same-day services where possible.

According to an Aer Lingus spokesperson, “The vast majority of customers are being reaccommodated on same-day services.” Yet, the scale of the cuts has raised questions about operational pressures beyond routine maintenance.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) recently estimated that Europe has about six weeks of jet fuel left due to ongoing conflicts. Willie Walsh commented on this situation, stating that “The IEA’s assessment of potential jet fuel shortages is sobering.”

Ireland is set to ask the European Commission to temporarily remove tax on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) imported from the United States. Currently, the duty on SAF imports stands at around eight percent.

Aer Lingus has also joined Ryanair in requiring that passengers traveling between Great Britain and Ireland carry passports. All customers traveling on Aer Lingus services between the Republic of Ireland and the UK now need a valid passport or Irish passport card.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding whether these operational pressures will continue into the peak travel season. The impact of removing SAF import duties on airline operations may also be limited.
