Severe weather events, including tornadoes and strong storms, have been impacting various regions, including North Carolina and the D.C. area. A Level 4 of 5 severe storm risk was issued for central North Carolina, prompting officials to warn residents to stay alert.

Throughout the day, Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and a Tornado Watch were in effect for much of North Carolina. A tornado touched down in Charlotte, damaging a warehouse and contributing to the overall chaos of the day.

Wind gusts in the D.C. region reached up to 75 mph, leading to significant disruptions. Flooding occurred on major roadways due to heavy rainfall, with some areas experiencing 3 to 5 inches of rainfall per hour.

Thousands of homes lost power as a result of the storms, with 1,600 customers reported without electricity in Franklin County alone. Emergency officials in Fayetteville emphasized the importance of preparedness for severe weather, urging residents to take necessary precautions.

Gov. Josh Stein stated, “As this storm moves across the state, North Carolinians should stay alert and be prepared to take cover if severe weather develops nearby.” Meanwhile, NC Emergency Management Director Will Ray noted, “We have seen multiple tornado warnings so far today, and we will continue to see the chance of severe weather throughout the day.”

In the D.C. region, the National Weather Service issued a moderate risk for severe storms. Meteorologists warned that one more band of strong, possibly severe thunderstorms would move through the area later in the evening.

WTOP Meteorologist Mike Stinneford mentioned, “The storms and rainfall are expected to wrap up overnight with a few wet snowflakes in the mix as temperatures plummet into the 20s and 30s after midnight.” This shift in weather could bring additional challenges for residents already dealing with the aftermath of the storms.

As emergency services respond to the situation, local officials continue to monitor the weather and provide updates to the public. The storms have highlighted the need for ongoing vigilance and preparedness in the face of severe weather.
