Celebrating Reading on World Book Day
“World Book Day is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate reading at your local library,” said Councillor Ian Cresswell, emphasizing the importance of this annual event.
Scheduled for March 5, 2026, World Book Day aims to promote reading for pleasure among children and young people. This year, the Premier League will contribute significantly to the celebration by giving away more than 120,000 free books to children across England and Wales.
Since the inception of the Premier League Primary Stars programme in 2017, over 460,000 free books have been gifted to young people, highlighting the initiative’s ongoing commitment to fostering a love for reading.
“Reading for pleasure has a powerful impact on a child’s confidence, wellbeing, and future success,” Councillor Cresswell added, underlining the broader benefits of engaging with literature.
In Worcestershire, local libraries are gearing up for World Book Day with themed activities designed to engage young readers. St John’s Library will serve as an official voucher exchange hub for the event, facilitating access to books for many children.
Additionally, Malvern Library is set to host a ‘Meet the Author’ event with Daisy Merle on March 4, providing an exciting opportunity for children to interact with a writer and learn about the creative process.
On March 5, Redditch & Woodrow Libraries will run a free Storytime and craft session, further encouraging children to explore the joys of reading through interactive activities.
World Book Day continues to be a vital platform for promoting literacy and a love for reading among young people, with various organizations and communities coming together to celebrate this important occasion.
As the date approaches, more details about events and activities are expected to be announced, ensuring that World Book Day 2026 will be a memorable celebration of literature and learning.
