The draw for the second round of the Carabao Cup has been announced, setting up several notable matches. Among the fixtures, Chelsea, five-time winners of the competition, are set to host League One Luton at Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile, Tottenham will welcome Championship side Charlton.
In another significant tie, David Moyes is scheduled to return to Deepdale as Everton visit Preston North End, the club where he started his managerial career. Newcastle will face West Bromwich Albion, a team from the second tier, and Fulham is drawn against AFC Wimbledon at Craven Cottage.
Brentford will have an away match against Championship side Birmingham City at St Andrew’s. Birmingham City advanced to this stage after defeating Swansea City 1-0 in the first round. Brentford enters the competition at this stage, along with other top-flight teams not participating in European competitions this season. The club reached the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup in the previous two campaigns.
The only all-Premier League encounter in this round will see four-time winners Nottingham Forest play Leeds. Other matches include Ipswich against Leicester, and West Ham, who secured a victory over Portsmouth in the first round, will travel to fellow Championship side Southampton.
Fixture Scheduling Challenges
The scheduling of some second-round matches presents potential complications, particularly for Fulham and Chelsea. Both teams were drawn to play at home in the Carabao Cup, and they are not typically scheduled to play at home on the same day. This situation arises after their Premier League match was selected for live broadcast on Monday, 24 August.
As neither Fulham nor Chelsea are involved in European competitions, they enter the Carabao Cup in the second round. If their EFL Cup ties are moved to Thursday to allow for 72 hours’ rest, it could impact the subsequent Premier League weekend schedule. Fulham’s match at Sunderland was already moved to Sunday, and Chelsea v Brighton was also chosen for Sunday broadcast.
Further knock-on effects could impact EFL clubs. The opponents of Fulham and Chelsea, namely Wimbledon and Luton respectively, have League One fixtures scheduled for the Saturday following the cup ties. If the Carabao Cup matches are played on Thursday, their Saturday games would ordinarily be moved to Sunday.
An additional complication involves the full programme of League One games scheduled for the following Tuesday. This could potentially affect four matches, which might need to be rescheduled to Wednesday. This could result in teams playing two games within 48 hours or supporters facing displaced games after making travel arrangements. The matches potentially impacted on Saturday, 29 August, include Wimbledon against Wigan and Mansfield versus Luton. On Tuesday, 1 September, potential impacts could affect Burton versus Wimbledon, Wigan against MK Dons, Luton versus Stockport, and Reading against Mansfield.

All second-round matches in the Carabao Cup are scheduled to take place during the midweek of the week commencing Monday, 24 August. The nine English clubs participating in European competitions this season will join the Carabao Cup in the third round.
