Anfield club eyes defensive reinforcement
Liverpool are reportedly nearing a season-long loan agreement for Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo. The deal for the Uruguay international is understood to include an option for a permanent transfer at the end of the campaign, should the club choose to exercise it.
The 27-year-old centre-back is expected to join the Liverpool squad this weekend. This move comes as Liverpool seeks to bolster its defensive options, particularly after Ibrahima Konate‘s departure to Real Madrid on a free transfer.
Reports indicate that Liverpool has been facing a defensive injury crisis ahead of the 2026-27 season. Joe Gomez recently sustained a muscle injury, which manager Andoni Iraola estimates will keep him out for several weeks, likely missing the start of the season. Additionally, Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are recovering from long-term layoffs, with their return dates still uncertain. This situation leaves captain Virgil van Dijk as the only fit senior centre-back currently available.
Iraola commented on the injury situation, stating that Joe Gomez‘s muscle injury means he will be out for some weeks, and it is difficult to give an exact return date for muscle injuries. He also mentioned being cautious with Jeremy Jacquet, who is experiencing discomfort after returning from a long period without playing. The manager expressed a desire to pair Jacquet with Virgil van Dijk once he recovers, especially given Gomez‘s injury.
Araujo’s Barcelona career and unexpected availability
Araujo has been a significant figure at Barcelona since joining from Uruguayan club Boston River in 2018. He has made over 200 appearances for the Spanish club and played a role in Barcelona winning La Liga in three of the last four seasons. Last season, he served as club captain.
Despite being under contract until 2031, Araujo made only 11 league starts last season. This was due to Gerard Martin and Pau Cubarsi emerging as Barcelona‘s preferred central defensive pairing. His availability for a loan move was unexpected, particularly after he was named captain earlier in the year following Marc-Andre ter Stegen‘s departure.
The decision by manager Hansi Flick to inform Araujo that he would not be a key starter upon his return for pre-season led to his unexpected availability. Initial reports of the loan deal were first broken by Fabrizio Romano, with confirmations from other sources, including The Times‘ Paul Joyce.
The specifics regarding any loan fee and the cost of the purchase option, should Liverpool activate it, have not been disclosed. Araujo is anticipated to bid farewell to his Barcelona teammates soon and travel to Liverpool to finalise the agreement. This move is seen as an opportune solution for Liverpool‘s defensive challenges, providing a player capable of starting immediately.
The inclusion of a purchase option provides flexibility for Liverpool, allowing them to assess the long-term fitness and form of players like Jacquet and Leoni. While this deal addresses a significant defensive need, Liverpool is reportedly still looking to strengthen other areas, with Iraola keen on acquiring at least one more winger, amid links to Paris Saint-Germain players Bradley Barcola and Ibrahima Mbaye.
