A report reveals that a significant number of UK convenience stores and candy shops may be fronts for organized crime. Up to 50% of these retailers are suspected of illicit activities, according to Trading Standards officials.
In contrast, the Swedish Moose Candy Co. opened in Downtown Provo at the end of 2025. This new store provides a unique experience with Swedish candy made from natural ingredients like red pepper and beets. This is a departure from the heavily processed American candy.
Statistics show troubling trends in both countries. In the UK, 97% of Trading Standards officers are aware of suspected criminal operations within retail premises. Furthermore, 72% of these professionals have reported intimidation or threats while performing their duties.
The situation appears similar in the US. Up to 33% of American candy stores may also serve as fronts for illegal activities. Ed Woodall from Trading Standards noted that 85% of retailers surveyed indicated an increase in illicit trading in their areas.
Sanna Mård-Castman from Swedish Moose Candy Co. commented on the importance of mindful consumption. “You know, our bodies and our minds are now so sensitive to everything that we eat and drink,” she said. This aligns with the growing trend towards digital detox and healthier choices among consumers.
In addition to these developments, KitKat Panama introduced a phone-blocking candy wrapper called Break Mode. This innovative wrapper uses a Faraday cage to prevent phone signals, encouraging customers to enjoy their treats without distractions.
The stark contrast between these two scenarios highlights ongoing challenges in retail environments. While some shops may be entangled with organized crime, others strive to create positive experiences for consumers.
