Sam Vokes concluded his professional career with a guard of honour and a victory in Gillingham F.C.‘s last match of the season on May 6, 2025, at Priestfield Stadium. The team faced Shrewsbury Town and secured a 1-0 win.
Garath McCleary scored the only goal of the match from 25 yards. This victory marked the end of the 2025/26 season for Gillingham, allowing Vokes to retire on a high note. He expressed pride in his achievements, stating, “I am proud of what I have achieved.”
During the match, Vokes received a guard of honour from his teammates. He reflected on his time with the club, saying, “It has been a joy being a part of this squad this year.” Vokes made a total of 751 appearances throughout his career.
Following the conclusion of the season, Gillingham confirmed its released and retained list. Players leaving include Travis Akomeah, Joshua Andrews, and Max Clark. Meanwhile, Cameron Antwi and Omar Beckles remain under contract for the upcoming 2026/27 season.
The club also announced that apprentices Cruz Beszant and Louie Dayal have been offered professional contracts. The club wishes all departing players success in their future endeavors.
