Italy FC secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Northern Ireland in the World Cup play-off semi-final held at New Balance Arena in Bergamo, Italy. This win marks a significant step for Italy, who has not qualified for the World Cup since 2014.
Under the management of Gennaro Gattuso, who replaced Luciano Spalletti in June, Italy has shown remarkable improvement, winning five of their last six matches. Gattuso expressed the importance of the match, stating, “I’ve been coaching for a number of years now, but certainly this game is the most important fixture of my coaching career so far.”
Italy finished second in Group I of the World Cup qualifiers, trailing six points behind Norway. Throughout the qualifying group stage, Italy scored a total of 23 goals, with Mateo Retegui leading the team with five goals. Other notable contributors included Moise Kean with four goals and Giacomo Raspadori with three.
Northern Ireland, on the other hand, has not qualified for the World Cup since 1986 and finished third in Group A of the qualifiers. They managed to score only seven goals during the qualifying stage. Northern Ireland’s manager, Michael O’Neill, acknowledged the pressure of the match, saying, “The pressure of managing Italy is a lot different from the pressure of managing Northern Ireland.”
As the teams prepare for the next stages, Italy is currently ranked 13th in the FIFA rankings, while Northern Ireland sits at 69th. With only 79 days remaining until the start of the 2026 World Cup, the stakes are high for both teams as they aim for qualification.
Gattuso remains optimistic about Italy’s chances, stating, “I want to think big, and we certainly will compete and we’ll see how things come out.” Meanwhile, Northern Ireland is expected to adopt a defensive strategy, with O’Neill noting that “Northern Ireland will set up to defend like their lives depend on it.”
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the next steps for both teams as they look ahead to the World Cup.
