Jesse Derry, an 18-year-old Chelsea forward, was taken to the hospital after sustaining a head injury during his Premier League debut against Nottingham Forest. The incident occurred in the 45th minute when he clashed heads with Zach Abbott.
Derry received oxygen on the pitch before being transported off on a stretcher. Chelsea confirmed that he is conscious and talking after the incident. Coach Calum McFarlane expressed hope for Derry’s recovery, stating, “All signs are positive at the moment so we’re hopeful he’s in a good condition.”
Derry made his first start for Chelsea following a successful academy season. He scored 12 goals in 29 matches this year. He joined Chelsea from Crystal Palace last summer.
The clash resulted in a penalty for Chelsea, which Matz Sels saved. Liam Delap replaced Derry as a concussion substitute after the incident. McFarlane praised Derry’s performance before the injury, saying, “Gutted for Jesse, I thought he did well in the game.”
Chelsea lost the match 3-1 to Nottingham Forest despite having several chances. The team will monitor Derry’s condition closely as he undergoes concussion protocol.
