The 2026 Met Gala will take place on May 4 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The theme, ‘Costume Art,’ emphasizes the significance of the dressed body in art history.
Previously, themes often included subtitles or specific focuses. This year marks a decisive change as Andrew Bolton presents a theme without a subtitle for the first time.
The exhibition will feature nearly 12,000 square feet of the Condé M. Nast Galleries. It will include paintings, sculptures, and garments spanning 5,000 years of art history. The dress code is ‘Fashion Is Art.’
The carpet design for the Met Gala reflects this year’s theme. It was hand-painted to resemble a stone garden pathway with patches of moss green.
Andrew Bolton stated, “What connects every curatorial department and what connects every single gallery in the museum is fashion, or the dressed body.” This perspective highlights how deeply intertwined fashion is with cultural expression.
The event aims to celebrate both contemporary and historical aspects of costume and art. This shift may attract diverse attendees who appreciate the broader implications of fashion.
In preparation for this event, discussions have focused on how to engage audiences with the exhibition’s content. Bolton mentioned, “We took it out and it was like taking off a corset,” referring to breaking traditional constraints in fashion presentation.
