Nightlife in Mallorca Faces Decline as Liverpool Rises in Safety

nightlife — GB news

Mallorca’s nightlife is bracing for a further revenue decline as local and tourist spending diminishes. The nightlife sector in Mallorca is anticipating lower revenue than in 2025 due to reduced tourist spending and loss of local customers. This follows a decline experienced in 2025 compared to previous seasons.

In contrast, Liverpool has emerged as one of the safest cities for nightlife. Approximately 60% of people reported feeling safe walking around Liverpool city centre after 10pm. The city has held Purple Flag accreditation for sixteen consecutive years, indicating a commitment to maintaining a safe night-time economy.

However, not all feedback from the community is positive. A significant portion of the LGBT+ community expresses concerns about safety; 75% feel at risk of being harassed on a night out. Additionally, 71% of women surveyed fear sexual assault during nights out, according to the Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner.

Liverpool’s response includes initiatives aimed at improving safety standards. The night-time safety charter aims to deliver more training to bar staff to help prevent harassment. Over 125 businesses in Liverpool have signed this charter, recognizing their role in ensuring a safer environment.

In Mallorca, clubs are reacting by shortening opening hours. They aim to contain operating costs and focus on attracting customers during peak weekend nights. Miguel Pérez-Marsá, from the CAEB Restaurants Association, stated, “We were already coming off a slow year, and now the forecast is for even lower attendance and, consequently, lower revenue.” This reflects broader economic trends affecting local businesses.

Despite these challenges, Liverpool’s nightlife continues to thrive. Joe Maguire from the Liverpool BID company believes that safety measures contribute significantly to the city’s appeal. He said, “I firmly believe Liverpool is one of the safest nights out anyone can have.” Clive Duffey from Ask for Clive emphasized that venues must create inclusive spaces: “Our sticker is placed at the front door of venues to recognise them as an inclusive hate-free space… it’s about venues creating a culture of safety.”

The contrasting situations highlight different approaches to nightlife management. While Mallorca faces challenges with declining revenues and customer attendance, Liverpool focuses on enhancing safety measures amidst ongoing concerns from certain communities.
