Chelsea’s Stance on Fernandez Transfer
Chelsea have issued a deadline to Manchester City for any potential bid for midfielder Enzo Fernandez. City has until 5pm this Friday to submit an offer for the Argentina international. Chelsea values Fernandez at £120m and has communicated that if this valuation is not met by the deadline, the player will not be sold during the current summer transfer window. The club’s decision to set a firm deadline aims to prevent prolonged distractions as the new season approaches.
Fernandez has six years remaining on his current contract with Chelsea. The club acquired him from Benfica for approximately £107m during the 2023 winter transfer window. Chelsea’s management believes that new manager Xabi Alonso and the squad should be able to concentrate on the upcoming season without ongoing transfer speculation.
Manchester City’s Interest and Midfield Situation
Manchester City has shown interest in Fernandez, partly due to his previous strong relationship with Enzo Maresca, who is now City’s manager. City paid Chelsea £17m in compensation to appoint Maresca this summer. The club is reportedly keen to support Maresca in the transfer market, including pursuing Fernandez.
The prospect of City making a late move for Fernandez has been heightened by Barcelona‘s pursuit of City midfielder Rodri. Barcelona had a £40m bid for Rodri rejected and is reportedly preparing to increase their offer to between £50m and £60m. Rodri has entered the final year of his contract with City. City has already secured central midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116m and is also in discussions with Lille for midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi.
While Fernandez is considered a top target for City, the reported £120m valuation is seen as substantial. City’s approach may involve attempting to negotiate the price down, although Chelsea’s public stance suggests a firm valuation. Other Champions League clubs have also expressed interest in Fernandez, but the high transfer fee limits the number of potential suitors.
Fernandez’s Future at Chelsea
Chelsea is prepared for Fernandez to remain at the club if their valuation is not met. Manager Xabi Alonso has reportedly spoken with Fernandez and intends to include him in his plans for the upcoming season. The club is also willing to reintegrate Fernandez following past events, which included a two-game ban for comments made about club decisions and speculation linking him with Real Madrid. Real Madrid previously issued a statement denying any attempt to sign Fernandez.
Chelsea views Fernandez as a valuable asset who can thrive under Alonso’s guidance. The club believes that keeping Fernandez would be beneficial, especially given his goal-scoring contributions last season, where he scored 15 goals. If Fernandez were to depart, Chelsea would have additional funds, but finding a suitable replacement late in the transfer window could be challenging. The summer transfer window is scheduled to close on Tuesday, September 1.
Chelsea has other midfield options available, including Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Dario Essugo, Jordan Henderson, Valentin Barco, and captain Reece James. The club also had a £64m bid for Bournemouth‘s Alex Scott turned down earlier in the window, indicating other potential targets. However, securing desired players late in the window can be difficult, and selling clubs may increase their asking prices if Chelsea has substantial funds from a potential Fernandez sale.
