“The young girl was confirmed deceased at the hospital and the woman remains in a critical condition,” stated a police spokesperson following a tragic incident on April 1, 2026.
The collision occurred around 6:25 PM on the A228 Boyle Way in East Peckham, where a pony and trap was struck by a white DAF tipper truck. Emergency services, including police, fire crews, and paramedics, responded promptly to the scene.
A 29-year-old man from Kent was driving the truck and has since been arrested as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. A man in his 30s, who was riding in the trap, was confirmed dead at the scene.
Tragically, the young girl, who was also in the pony and trap, was transported to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival. Additionally, the woman riding in the trap is reported to be in critical condition.
Police confirmed that the pony involved in the incident also died at the scene. The route was closed in both directions as investigations commenced, and two air ambulances landed nearby to assist with the emergency response.
“Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash and are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage,” a police statement read. They urged anyone who saw the truck or pony and trap prior to the collision to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit.
Details remain unconfirmed as the investigation continues, and authorities are working to gather more information about the events leading up to the collision.
