Waitrose has become the first major UK supermarket to suspend mackerel sales due to sustainability concerns. The suspension began on April 29, 2026, amidst worries about overfishing.
Waitrose removed fresh, chilled, and frozen mackerel from all its UK stores. Tinned mackerel will follow once existing stock runs out. The decision came after governments failed to reduce mackerel catches to sustainable levels recommended by scientists.
Mackerel stocks in the North-east Atlantic have declined significantly, plummeting 75% over the past decade due to overfishing. Conservationists have welcomed this decision and urged other supermarkets to follow suit.
Jake Pickering from Waitrose stated, “By suspending sourcing of mackerel at Waitrose, we are reinforcing our ethical and sustainable business commitments.” He emphasized the need to tackle overfishing and protect ocean health.
Waitrose plans to introduce 100% MSC-certified frozen sardines as a sustainable alternative. This aligns with the Sustainable Seafood Coalition codes of conduct.
The fishing industry faces pressure as mackerel stocks continue to decline. Four coastal states decided on a 48% cut in mackerel catches, but many believe more action is necessary.
No timeline has been shared for when Waitrose might resume sourcing mackerel. However, they aim to maintain relationships with their suppliers during this period.
Charles Clover, a conservationist, remarked, “This crisis has been ignored for too long. We hope that this action by Waitrose sends it to the top of the political agenda.”
