Fuel: Air France-KLM Faces Rising Costs Amid Geopolitical Tensions

Air France-KLM’s fuel bill is expected to increase by $2.4 billion this year due to rising costs from the Iran war. This surge in fuel prices has prompted the airline to adjust its operational strategies.

Ben Smith, CEO of Air France-KLM, stated, “Fuel price increases were expected to weigh on the coming quarters.” The airline anticipates its total fuel bill will reach $9.3 billion by 2026, a significant rise compared to previous forecasts. This increase reflects the broader impact of geopolitical tensions on global fuel markets.

To cope with these rising costs, Air France-KLM has revised its capacity growth forecast for this year. It now expects growth between 2% and 4%, down from an earlier estimate of 3% to 5%. This adjustment aims to better align operations with current market conditions.

In its first quarter, Air France-KLM reported an operating loss of €27 million. This figure was an improvement over analysts’ projections of a €389 million loss. Despite the challenges posed by increasing fuel prices, the airline is working on mitigating financial impacts through various strategies.

Rolls-Royce, a UK jet engine maker, is also navigating these turbulent times. The company has maintained its profit guidance despite the ongoing fuel price increases affecting the aviation industry.

Meanwhile, Mazda is taking innovative steps in sustainability. The launch of the all-new Mazda CX-5 will use a 100% second-generation biofuel that contains no fossil fuel components. Jeremy Thomson from Mazda commented, “Using a fuel with no fossil fuel component on our all-new Mazda CX-5 UK media event is a great illustration of the benefits of combining an efficient internal combustion engine and advanced biofuels to save CO2 emissions.”

This bespoke SUSTAIN 100 95 RON E10 biofuel is created from biomass such as food and agricultural waste. It is expected to deliver a greenhouse gas saving of over 80% compared to traditional fossil fuels.
