Hantavirus: Three passengers die from on cruise ship

hantavirus — GB news

Three passengers onboard the MV Hondius have died due to a suspected hantavirus outbreak, prompting Cape Verde to block the ship’s docking. At least two other passengers have fallen ill, and one British tourist is currently in intensive care in South Africa.

Authorities reported that the ship was carrying 147 passengers and crew when the outbreak was detected. One case of hantavirus infection has been laboratory confirmed, with five additional suspected cases. The hantavirus is primarily found in rodents and can lead to severe respiratory illness.

The Dutch foreign ministry is coordinating medical evacuations for affected passengers. An anonymous passenger stated, “The latest word is that a plane is on its way and once it gets here three people will be evacuated from the ship and flown straight to Europe.” This situation highlights concerns regarding public health aboard cruise ships.

The World Health Organization (WHO) addressed the outbreak, emphasizing that “the risk to the wider public remains low,” while urging no panic or travel restrictions. Hantavirus infections are usually spread by infected rodents’ urine or feces and can be fatal.

The British national who fell ill tested positive for hantavirus after being transferred to a health facility in Johannesburg. This incident follows a troubling pattern of cruise ship outbreaks linked to infectious diseases.

Health officials are monitoring the situation closely as investigations continue into the source of the virus. Authorities have not disclosed how many passengers may require further medical attention.
