James Holder, co-founder of Superdry, was found guilty of raping a woman after a night out. The incident occurred on May 6, 2022, in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. The court heard that the woman was intoxicated and asked Holder to stop during the encounter.
Holder denied the charges of rape and assault by penetration. He claimed the sexual encounter was consensual. He said, “I had been out for much longer than I anticipated and I needed to go home. I let myself out. She was asleep on the bed.” However, the prosecution argued otherwise.
The trial took place at Gloucester Crown Court, sitting at Cirencester Courthouse. Testimony included details about the woman’s state during the incident. James Haskell, a witness, stated, “She was telling him to stop. At one point, she remembered starting to cry, but even then, he didn’t stop.” This highlights significant issues surrounding consent.
Holder’s history in the fashion industry is notable. He was a creative force behind many of Superdry’s signature designs until he left the company in 2016. Superdry was founded in 2003 by Holder and Julian Dunkerton.
Holder’s estimated fortune was around £199 million in 2018 according to The Sunday Times Rich List. His past success contrasts sharply with his current legal troubles.
The case underscores ongoing conversations about accountability in nightlife culture. It raises important questions regarding consent and the impact of intoxication on such encounters.
