Elsie Kelly died aged 89 on April 21, 2026. She was best known for her role as Noreen in the ITV comedy Benidorm.
Kelly played Noreen from 2006 to 2018. Her character was initially slated to die in the first episode, but the show’s writer changed course after seeing the chemistry between her and other characters.
Born in Liverpool in 1936, Kelly began her entertainment career as a musical theatre director. She directed the Birkenhead Operatic Society Trust from 1974 until 2019.
Kelly made her television debut in the ITV soap Crossroads in 1979. She played Mrs. Tardebrigge until the show ended in 1988.
In Benidorm, she appeared in nine of the ten seasons. In the final season, she also portrayed Noreen’s twin sister Doreen.
Her death was confirmed by her agent Michelle Sykes. Derren Litten, creator of Benidorm, called her a “comedic genius.” He expressed sadness over her passing.
Crissy Rock shared fond memories from filming, stating, “She was an absolute joy to work with and brought so much warmth and laughter wherever she went.” Laura Stevenson remarked on Kelly’s impact during rehearsals—”you could hear a pin drop” when she spoke.
