Portugal has launched the Volta deposit return system (DRS) aimed at enhancing recycling efforts for single-use plastic drinks bottles and metal cans. This initiative is supported by approximately 2,500 reverse vending machines across the country, where consumers will pay a €0.10 deposit on each eligible container. The program is designed to facilitate the return of containers, thereby promoting environmental sustainability.
Paulo Borges, a spokesperson for the initiative, stated, “Portugal’s DRS is a transformative step toward a cleaner environment and a more circular economy.” He emphasized that the operational setup includes logistics arrangements for the collection and transport of returned containers, which required broader integration involving several operators.
In addition to environmental initiatives, Portugal has shown a remarkable engagement with technology, particularly generative AI. Recent data indicates that around 80% of Portuguese consumers report using generative AI, which is notably higher than the European average. Furthermore, 39% of these users engage with AI tools on a daily basis, reflecting a growing trend in digital adoption.
Trust in generative AI among Portuguese consumers stands at 62%, suggesting a positive reception of these technologies. This high level of engagement and trust may contribute to the country’s innovative landscape, potentially influencing various sectors, including education, business, and entertainment.
