Smyths Toys Asbestos Recall: Health Risk Identified

smyths toys asbestos recall — GB news

Smyths Toys has issued a recall for several of its products after a three-year-old boy ingested part of a toy that may be contaminated with asbestos. The incident occurred in Lincoln, UK, and has raised significant health concerns.

The toy in question is a ‘Let’s Dig Out Dinosaur Eggs’ kit, which contains a material described as ‘dinosaur sand’. Initially, the mother of the child was reassured by Smyths Toys that the material was made from plaster of Paris and was ‘not considered dangerous’. However, a subsequent recall notice indicated that the product presented a health risk due to possible asbestos contamination.

The recall affects seven different toy products sold by Smyths Toys. The European Commission and the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) in the UK are currently reviewing these sand toy products to assess the extent of the contamination risk.

Concerns were raised by the mother of the child 16 times before she received a response from Smyths Toys. Alarmingly, the company did not contact her directly after learning that her son had ingested the material.

In a statement, Smyths Toys acknowledged the situation, saying, “The European Commission & OPSS are undertaking a review of these (sand toy) products.” They also confirmed that the product posed a health risk because the sand-like material inside the kit may be contaminated with a small quantity of asbestos.

This incident has sparked discussions about the speed at which risk information is communicated to families, especially when children are involved. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the final scope of the problem, as the review by the European Commission and OPSS is ongoing.

As the situation develops, the exact number of families affected by the recall remains unclear. Parents are advised to check their children’s toys and report any concerns to the relevant authorities.
